Creating a society full of kindness

The world is already too harsh. As the ones atop the pyramid pit brother against brother and nation against nation in an unending quest for power, it is the ones who are already at the bottom who are still being constantly shoved into poverty and made into collateral damage. In a world where people fear what is unknown and different and so our natural response is discrimination and hate even when it is a fellow human being in question. How can we remain kind in a world like this? Would kindness even make a difference?

For us it might be difficult to be kind to people who’ve only done us wrong but what we tend to forget is that they’re the ones who need it the most. Though it can be hard to do, a little kindness can go a long way. It doesn’t have to be anything big. Kindness can be seen even in the smallest of gestures—holding the door open for someone behind you, helping pick up stuff someone dropped on the floor, or even by merely smiling at a stranger as you walk past each other.

Everyday I try to be kind as much as possible. When in an argument with a sibling I try to be more understanding, when encountering a slight inconvenience with people I try to extend my patience, I would help my father with the paperwork he needs to finish, or I would help my younger brother with his homework that he finds difficult. Nothing big and nothing world-changing but for me it’s a start.

There is kindness in a word, an action, and even a smile. We cannot fix society’s problems in a day, but we do what we can. Everyone is facing a battle unknown to us and sometimes people let their emotions get the best of them. As much as we can we must always remember, that despite the frustrations and heartbreak the world throws our way we must never give it back to someone else.

This difficult world has turned countless hearts into stone since one would think that the only way to survive is to be harsher than the other and to be better than your neighbour. This kind of selfish mindset will be the cause of our society’s destruction. Fortunately, it is not yet the end of the world. Despite our selfish nature we are still capable of change and of growth and this gives hope that one day we can remove the stumbling blocks preventing us from destroying the pyramid of inequality.

It is important for us to know that heartlessness is not strength but instead, strength is being able to be kind despite everything else urging you to be cruel. Kindness makes all the difference in the world. A society filled with kindness can create individuals capable of teaching people to be kinder to themselves and others and creating a domino effect hopefully improving the well-being of society. In a world that’s already too harsh, change should start with YOU.
